Many are still reeling from the news that Sony is shutting down the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, and PlayStation Vita digital storefronts, meaninga ton of games will be lost forever. Now,Ubisofthas announced that, while it’s not removing any games from its storefronts, it will be shutting down online support for a dozen of its titles later this year.

In a forum post,Ubisoftexplains that shutting down online services for older games with small audiences is ultimately a necessity, as it allows its staff to better focus on supporting the services for current, more popular games, which arguably need it more so. As for what exactly is being affected, it means that any games with online multiplayer will lose that feature (single-player features will remain untouched) and in-game news and player stats services will also be shut down.

Ubisoft Connect-enabled games will lose access to the service and it will no longer be possible to earn Units (the Ubisoft Connect currency). Bizarrely, rewards will be disabled too, but this means that players just won’t receive them even if they unlock them. Ubisoft does state that anyone who unlocks these rewards after the closure of the game’s online service can contact Customer Support to receive a refund.

All unlockable content will be disabled but while console owners will be able to keep any content they’ve redeemed (until they reset their saved game files), PC owners will lose the content regardless. Lastly, any in-game currency needs to be spent within the 60 days period, as it will become worthless once the online services shut down and Ubisoft won’t offer any refunds on unspent currency.

Eight of the 12 games being affected are specifically the PC versions and will all lose their online support on June 1st. The games in question areAssassin’s Creed 2,Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands,Far Cry 2,Anno 1401,Might & Magic - Clash of Heroes,Splinter Cell Conviction,The Settlers 7, andMight & Magic X - Legacy.

The remaining four games don’t have an exact date yet, but all of their versions, console and PC, will have their online services shut down later in the year. These games areGhost Recon Future Soldier,Rainbow Six Lockdown,Rainbow Six Vegas, andRainbow Six Vegas 2.

Fortunately forRainbow Sixfans, they already have some alternatives that most of them are probably already playing.Rainbow Six Siegeis still receiving updates and Ubisoft is also working on another spin-off titledRainbow Six: Parasite, which is expected to release this year.
