In a recent discussion aboutSpider-Man: No Way Home, Tom Holland says that his third film will have an entirely different feel than its predecessors.

Holland’s first solo film as the web-slinging hero premiered in 2017, followed by its sequel in 2019. According to Holland,Spider-Man: No Way Homewon’t be as light-hearted asSpider-Man: HomecomingandSpider-Man: Far From Home.

While discussing the upcoming Spider-Man film with Total Film, Holland says that people will be surprised to find out thatSpider-Man: No Way Homeis not a fun film. “It’s dark and it’s sad, and it’s going to be really affecting,” Holland said. “You’re going to see characters that you love go through things that you would never wish for them to go through.” Holland went on to say that he was happy to explore this new side of Peter Parker, as the character is traditionally optimistic when it comes to his abilities to fix any situation that arises. “He’s always like, ‘I can fix this. I can do this,'” Holland said. “Whereas in this film, he feels like he’s met his match. He’s like, ‘I don’t really know what to do.'”

Holland admits that he hasn’t seen the film in its entirety yet, but from the pieces he has seen, he calls it “the best Spider-Man film we’ve ever made.” He went on to say that fans likely aren’t prepared for whatNo Way Homewill do, but neither is he. “I don’t really think fans are at all ready for what they’ve put together,” Holland said. “I know that I’m not ready, and I know it’s going to be brutal.” Whether Holland’s feelings of brutality stem from the emotion of the film orthe end of hisSpider-Man franchiseis unclear. However, his belief thatNo Way Homewill top the gut-wrenching grief inFar From Homesuggests that thisSpider-Manfilm will be difficult to stomach.

With Holland’s own performance as Spider-Man come the rumors that are swirling about the film’s use of the three generations of Spider-Man. When asked if Holland felt the need to prove himself to any of his rumored castmates, he said, “it was interesting having some of those guys come in because they have a certain ownership over Spider-Man in their own way and our Spidey-senses start tingling.” Holland clarifies that he is referencing Alfred Molina, Jamie Foxx, and others like them. He adds that whenit comes to Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, “People don’t believe me when I say that they are not coming back,” he said. “But people are going to have to believe me at some point.”

Holland wouldn’t be the first to deny the rumors that Maguire and Garfield will make an appearance inNo Way Home, and he likely won’t be the last. With the impressive cast continuing to grow through the release ofthe officialSpider-Man: No Way Homeposter, a second trailer may help clarify some of these additional rumors once and for all. Whether the rumors are true or false, in the end,No Way Homewill be an unprecedented journey for Holland’s Peter Parker.
