Destiny 2has been in a constant state of uncertainty and turmoil for a long time now, as The Witch Queen brought a year of good releases and the expansion itself was a great chapter in the Light vs. Darkness saga, but Lightfall failed to deliver what it promised - a worthy penultimate chapter. With the game then facing controversies and thedelay of The Final Shapeon top of layoffs at Bungie, morale within the community has been low, and sales forDestiny 2have been dwindling accordingly. In this scenario, a recent video from popular content creator GernaderJake about the future ofDestiny 2and issues Bungie is facing included a mention of how The Final Shape could be the last expansion for the game, which then sparked a debate.

Destiny 2is often cited as one of the biggest success stories for live-service games, something that was not the case from the get-go. Bungie got there with constant updates targeted at improving the gameplay, the state of the game as a whole, and adding new permanent and temporary content for players to engage with. The Final Shape will keep on doing this by introducing a new model - Episodes, which will take the place of the current seasons - and there are a few reasons why some fans believe this will indeed be the last expansion for the game and others don’t.

Destiny 2’s ‘Last Yearly Expansion’ Debate Explained

Why Destiny 2 Players Are Debating Whether The Final Shape Will Be The Last Expansion Ever

In the original video from GernaderJake, the content creator mentioned how The Final Shape feels like the last timeDestiny 2will get a new yearly expansion and accompanying Raid, with the Episodes potentially taking over and continuing forever. Several fans do agree with this take based on how tight-lipped Bungie has been concerning what comes next, and this may stem from the fact that The Final Shape is the end of a10-year saga forDestiny 2.

This, combined with the all-time low player count forDestiny 2’s Season of the Wish, can be enough of a reason to believe that there won’t be much more to support the game’s future outside of Episodes. On the other hand, those who don’t agree with the take are convinced that Bungie won’t simply forget aboutDestiny 2and be done with it once The Final Shape releases, but its success (or lack thereof) may influence the outcome. No new yearly expansions and Raids would effectively be a “Destiny 2killer,” much like other games were supposed to be.

Why Destiny 2 Not Getting Additional Expansions After The Final Shape is Unlikely

Destiny 2’s The Final Shape is Unlikely to Be The Last Yearly Expansion

WhileDestiny 2’s new Episodescan be a refreshing way to add content to the game due to bigger and longer stories than those of seasons, if anything also thanks to Episodes spanning four months, they would struggle to carryDestiny 2’s live service elements alone. Yearly expansions are a great chance for Bungie to have a lot of marketing material to hype up players and new merchandise associated with the big releases, and it’s a good way to keep the game flowing with new content, also in terms of big balance patches.

As such, it seems extremely unlikely for Bungie to just scrap yearly expansions and everything they have riding on. In particular, no new Raids would drive away a lot of PvE players. What could happen, however, is thatDestiny 2yearly expansionswill be released on an 18-month schedule after The Final Shape, as that helped Bungie deliver a quality product with The Witch Queen, and the company eventually extended Season of the Wish to June to do the same for the last chapter of the saga. Since Episodes are 4-month releases, maybe this cycle could instead entail four episodes for a total span of 16 months. Regardless, as it stands, there is no indication that Bungie is about to stop making yearly expansions and Raids forDestiny 2, and it seems like a massive gamble that would do no one any good.
