Legendary comic Steve Martin made quite a few headlines when he strongly hinted thatOnly Murders in the Buildingwould be his final project overall as an actor. However, Martin recently clarified that his comments may not have signalled that he was planning to retire from acting once theHulumurder mystery hit concludes.

Martin cleared the air about his comments regarding his career after theHuluseries. While not necessarily confirming or denying that retirement is up next once all of his commitments are done and over with, he made it clear that his earlier comments may not have meant what he was trying to say.

Speaking to E! on the Emmys red carpet (viaPeople), Martin made it clear that what he said was made into a bigger deal than it actually was. “It’s a little overstated,” Martin said. “They asked me, ‘Do you think about retirement?’ I said, ‘Well this is it. I’m doing a television show, I’ve got a book coming out, and I’m touring with [Martin Short]. That kind of is my retirement — that’s what it’s going to look like.'” Short later added that he hopes this isn’t it for Martin. “I can’t imagine him ever retiring,” Short said. “I hope not, because then you know what happens to me.”Martin and Short have appeared in various projects togethersince rising to prominence in the 1970s.

Whether Martin is retiring or not onceOnly Murders in the Buildingwraps up, one thing to keep in mind is that no one knows when that will exactly happen, given the show’s immense popularity since it first started streaming for Hulu in 2021. Just after the second season started,Only Murders in the Buildinghad been renewedfor a third season, and there’s no indication that the show has an end date in mind, although their formula can only go on for so long before it starts getting repetitive. Luckily the fans were pretty satisfied with how the second season turned out, though the third season will presumably go back and forth through the past and present for its mystery.

In Martin’s case, it’s totally up to him whether he wants to call it a career once all of his current ventures end. All in all, it’s just great to see him thrive in a project that wasn’t in his wheelhouse compared to what he usually did when he starred in hits after hits, likeThe JerkandThe Three Amigos.Only Murders in the Buildinghas more or less reminded audiences of how funny Martin can be since he hadn’t done much notable work over the past decade or so. They say that it’s best to leave your audience wanting more than to have them grow sick of you. If Martin truly is done onceOnly Murders in the Buildingconcludes, it would be a fitting end to his prosperous career as a comic.

But if he plans to do more projects once the show is done - again, no one knows when that will be - the audience will be more than happy to see him since the show has redeemed his value as a star. Better yet, he’s shown that he can adapt to what comedy has become in modern days compared to what it was when he was a movie star. That’s not to say one is better than the other, but rather that the game has changed drastically over the past several decades. If Martin keeps going, he’s shown that he can, in fact, keep with the times. No matter what he decides, the audience is behind Martin 100 percent.

Only Murders in the Buildingcan be streamed on Hulu.
