Just like a lot of otheropen-world Bethesda games,Starfieldhas the player make countless choices during a typical playthrough. Most are fairly inconsequential, but a few can have major ramifications when it comes to how certain events pan out. The most significant choice in the game revolves around which of the two main Starborn to side with during the Unearthed main story mission, with players able to choose the Hunter, the Emissary, or neither.

The Hunter argues that concepts like right and wrong don’t really matter in the grand scheme of things; only power and those too weak to seek it. The Emissary, on the other hand, believes that the vast power of the Unity should be reserved for those truly worthy of it. It’s up toStarfieldplayers to decide which philosophy aligns best with their own, or whether to turn their backs on both Starborn and tackle the final stages of the game by themselves.

Warning: The following guide contains major story spoilers forStarfield.

Players will first be introduced to the idea of choosing between the Hunter and the Emissary while onboard the former’s ship aftersolving the Scorpion’s Sting puzzle. However, they won’t actually need to make their decision until a little later on, so those who are still at this point in the game should avoid reading any further until their next encounter with the pair so as to avoid potential spoilers. None of their dialog choices during this first encounter make any difference.

Should You Choose The Hunter or The Emissary in Starfield?

After exploring the abandoned NASA facility, players will finally learnthe truth about what happened to Earth, at which point, they’ll again be greeted by the Hunter and the Emissary. It’s at this point where they’ll need to choose which - if either- of the pair to side with, which can have a huge impact on how the closing stages of the game play out. As such, players should think very carefully about how they proceed.

The player’s choice here will determine who they face at the end of the game. If they choose the Hunter, he’ll help them through the Buried Temple and they’ll facethe Emissaryas the final boss. Choosing the Emissary will lead to players facing off against the Hunter at the end of the game instead. If players choose neither, they’ll brave the Buried Temple alone and will need to defeat both of the Starborn in the final battle, making this the harder of the three potential outcomes by a considerable margin. However, there are a few important things to consider besides difficulty.

Firstly, it’s possible toskip the final boss fight using persuasionregardless of which option players choose. This isn’t really recommended though, as the final showdown inStarfieldis one that’s well worth experiencing and also allows players to get their hands on some unique gear. Choosing the Hunter also grants access to a special side mission called Infinity’s End, which again rewards players with a special weapon.

Every Possible Unique Weapon from the Emissary or the Hunter Choice

If players side with the Hunter and complete the Infinity’s End side quest, they’ll get a Rare melee weapon calledThe Last Priest. If they then go on to kill the Emissary, they’ll also get a Legendary particle beam rifle calledEternity’s Gateand a spacesuit calledStarborn Spacesuit Gravitas. If players side with the Emissary and killthe Hunter, they’ll get a Legendary laser rifle calledUnmitigated Violence. Choosing neither will allow players to get both Legendary weapons and the spacesuit, but not the Last Priest. Some players have reportedly been able to loot a Starborn spacesuit from the Hunter too, but if this is possible, the chances of it dropping appear to be incredibly low.

Those hoping to create a manual save file just before making their choice should hold off on speaking with the Emissary until after they’ve found every possible Artifact and completed every other available main story mission. This is because they won’t be able to press on to the game’s final mission until the aforementioned tasks have been completed, so it’s better to avoid making the choice until then. Players are still free to explore the NASA facility, but should refrain from speaking with the Emissary afterward until they’re ready to make their choice.
