Summary
Star Trek: Prodigyfans have gone to great and unusual lengths to save the program after it was abruptly shut down at Paramount Plus after one season, despite a second season being confirmed previously.
Star Trekis one of the biggest and most historically significant franchises. It has been a mainstay of the science fiction scene since it debuted in 1966 with the retroactively namedStar Trek: The Original Series, one of the most critically acclaimed and politically vocal science fiction shows. While the franchise was initially made for a narrow fanbase, it has since grown to appeal to a much larger audience partly due to the revival efforts of current franchise custodian Paramount, which entailed creating several new shows with varying appeal and a new film series.

Not long afterStar Trek: PicardandStar Trek: Discoveryended on Paramount Plus, the streamer set out to cancel the 3D-animated kids showStar Trek: Prodigyafter one season despite an earlier second season confirmation. However, several fans have protested the move and started a campaign to save the show, which many view as important to cultivating a new generation of viewers. In service of their noble cause, some fans got a banner emblazoned with “#SAVE STAR TREK PRODIGY” to be flown over the headquarters of major streaming services that could potentially pick up the show, including Amazon, Hulu, and Apple offices before circling for a while over Netflix HQ, where it was photographed for Twitter.
Star Trek: Prodigyseason 2, which is in post-production for later episodes, was unceremoniously dropped from its Paramount Plus release as part of new cost-cutting measures similarly taken by the streamer toDisney cancelingThe Spiderwick Chronicles. CBS Studios and the showrunners Dan and Kevin Hageman have expressed solidarity with the fans and a commitment to finishing and shopping out the second season, seemingly with permission from Paramount. In response to images of the banner flying over Netflix HQ, the showrunners’ joint account responded, “This is incredible. We owe these Trek fans a pint and our lifetime devotion. Blessed to have people like all of you in our stratosphere. #SaveStarTrekProdigy❤️🙏🖖🛩️”
While many are still debating the pros and cons of makingStar Trekmedia likeProdigyfor kids, there is no denying that the show has resonated with many fans within and outside of its target demographic. As the franchise’s overseers, letting the fans get their way and allowing the second season (and potentially more) ofStar Trek: Prodigymight be the right move to make for Paramount, even if the new content strategy the company is rolling out doesn’t allow for hosting it on Paramount Plus at this time. Fortunately, that seems to be the current stance at the streamer.
Despite the cheery effort from some fans, others in the community are not so optimistic and have taken to social media to share doubts about the second season’s timely release and the show’s future afterward. Whether or notStar Trek: Prodigywill flounder or return after its cancellation in asimilar style to Netflix’sWarrior Nuncan only be confirmed in due course.
Star Trek: Prodigyseason 1 is available for streaming on Paramount Plus.
