With Deadpool coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe,She-Hulk: Attorney at LawdirectorKat Coiro and star Tatiana Maslany want to remind audiences that when it comes to breaking the fourth wall, She-Hulk did it first. Only a day after its premiere, it seems some people are confused as to who started breaking the fourth wall first, so maybe it’s time to clear that up.
As reported byCBR, Hassan Mohammed from the Greek House Show asked the cast and crew of the Disney Plus series about She-Hulk’s ability to break the fourth wall. That’s when Coiro stepped in and reminded everyone that She-Hulk in fact breaks the fourth wall in the comics. The first She-Hulk comic was released in 1980,while the first Deadpool comicwas released in 1991, which makes Deadpool the one guilty of plagiarism.

“If you know anything about She-Hulk the character, you would know that she [did that],” Showrunner and executive producer Gao so proudly announces. Maslany, the star of the series, jokes, “Deadpool copied She-Hulk.” She continues with, “I think there issomething about She-Hulk’s awareness. Where she is able to go from being Jen to She-Hulk with a seamlessness. Her conscious stays the same, and she’s aware of the audience. That feels like it’s her superpower engaged with the meta element of the [show.]” Maslany explains, “It’s like an extension of her superpower, she’s like ‘I know I’m talking to a camera, I know you guys are watching this.’ And there’s something about that super hyper-awareness that is [a part] of who she is.”
Breaking the fourth wallis something that audiences either love or hate. However, it helps make characters more relatable, and Maslany can connect with the audience. The viewers can understand what is going through the mind of She-Hulk, and how she has to deal with the sudden changes to her body, and it makes fans feel like they are fully emersed in the life of Jennifer Walters.
Deadpool is a beloved fan favorite, so maybe audiences will hold off on scrutinizing the angsty comic for copying the She-Hulk’s style. But then again, it is said that imitation is the best form of flattery.
