Recent rumors have pointed toXbox bringing a critically-acclaimed gameto other platforms, with the leading theory being that the game in question is Tango Gameworks’Hi-Fi Rush. However, insider Jeff Grubb recently commented on these rumors, saying that he’s heardSea of Thieves"might" come to other platforms, specifically the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation consoles. Stephen Totilo backed up this claim, adding thatSea of Thievescould potentially come to PlayStation in early 2024, which would be within the next few months. Totilo did stress that he was unable to verify if Microsoft still planned on bringingSea of Thievesto PlayStation or not.

While Phil Spencer has pushed back on claims thatMicrosoft would be releasing Xbox Game Pass on competing platforms, it already has a history of releasing some of its exclusives on other systems. That doesn’t mean the practice will continue or thatSea of Thieveswill be coming to PS5 as rumored, but if any Xbox games are coming to competing platforms, Rare’s pirate adventure would perhaps make the most sense.

Sea of Thievesis a live service game, which means it needs as many players as possible to buy its microtransactions and stay afloat. HavingSea of Thieveson Xbox Game Pass proved to be a great way to expand its reach, but bringing it to a competing platform would do a lot of good as well. SwitchingSea of Thievesto a free-to-play experience would be another way to give it a boost, but time will tell if that ever happens.

In the meantime, it’s worth pointing out thatSea of Thievesdoesn’t really meet the criteria set out by the initial rumor.Sea of Thieveswas not critically-acclaimed at the time of its release, so perhaps Xbox has multiple games it’s planning to bring to other platforms, like the previously rumoredHi-Fi Rush. There are rumblings of anXbox Developer Direct presentation happening at some point in the near future, so perhaps more information will come sooner rather than later.
