Not unlike the remake that came to please horror fans in 2019,Resident Evil 3 Remakehas arrived to put one of the best classic horror titles of all time in stunning HD for both PC and console players. However, players enjoying the game on theXbox One X consolehave had to deal with an unfortunate drop in performance at times, prompting Capcom to release a patch that mitigated these effects to give players on the system the same experience as PC or PS4 Pro.
The drop in performance would often affect the frame-rate ofResident Evil 3, which could run at 60 fps on PC and PS4 Pro, but would often dip into the 50s and lower depending on the visuals. This effect was most notable during cutsenes, like thequestion raising after-credits scene, however the issues could appear at any time during gameplay as well, breaking that all-important immersion for Xbox One X players.

It would seem that one of the culprits for this issue, comes from the way thatResident Evil 3used a few workarounds to deliver on the 4K gaming experience that players on the newer game consoles look for. Similar to howResident Evil 2used an upscaled 2330x1620 resolution to simulate 4K, the new remake used the same settings for the PS4 Pro, but attempted to up the base resolution for Xbox One X to 2160p, causing the performance drop. While there are many tools available to game developers, likerendering stunning visuals through ray-tracing, it is always difficult to know exactly how things like 4K upscaling will affect performance from system to system.
Fortunately, the Xbox One X is now runningResident Evil 3in the simulated 4K with very little drops in frame-rate, matching the performance that appears on the PS4 Pro. Of course, this patch won’t be affecting the other systems in the Xbox One line, or either version of PS4, as those systems had already been running fine. With any luck, the lesson learned inResident Evil 3will continue inResident Evil 8and players won’t need a patch for the next entry in the franchise to hit the promised resolutions and frame-rates.
While the game may have had a rocky start on Xbox One X thanks to this attempt at hitting closer to native 4K, players have been fairly receptive to the latest remake. It certainly hasn’t gained the same type of following as theResident Evil 2Remakeand there are plenty of players who haveproblems withResident Evil 3, but its success is still encouraging for where Capcom is taking the series.
Resident Evil 3is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
