Pokemon Scarlet and Violetare easily some of the most anticipated games of the fall, with fans now able to say they release “next month.” November 18 will be here before fans know it, especially those involved in the numerousvideo game releases of October.
There are a lot of questions still to be answered aboutPokemon Scarlet and Violetthough. While details about the three storylines come out, less than 20 new Pokemon have been officially revealed. Fans who prefer to think of their team ahead of time have very few options as it stands, and that’s complicated when factoring in the various rumors aboutPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Paradox Pokemon. Game Freak will eventually, hopefully, address these questions, but one fan noticed an odd detail that posed a big question.

Redditor Educational_Cup4269 recently pointed out that the German version ofPokemon Scarletuses “Karmesin” for the subtitle instead of “Scharlach.” The former translates to Crimson, while the latter translates toScarlet. So, in other words, Germany is getting Pokemon Crimson andVioletinstead ofPokemon Scarlet and Violet. It’s clearly an important decision but one that does seem rather mind-boggling at first; however, Redditor Eggxcalibur quickly pointed out that Scharlach is primarily used for Scarlet Fever. This makes perfect sense because, in Germany,Pokkenis calledPokemon TekkenbecausePokkensounds a lot like Pocken, which means Small Pox.
It should be noted that, in English, the color Scarlet isn’t going to bring Scarlet Fever to mind immediately. Scharlach, however, can mean just Scarlet, but it’s more likely to bring Scarlet Fever to mind in terms of usage. The long and short of it is thatPokemon Scarletis called Crimson in Germany because of how odd languages can be, whether that’s English, German, or so on. Of course, this isn’t the only thing in the franchise where translations would be odd if not changed.
Most Pokemon, for example, change their names because of the region, whileLegendary Pokemonoften retain their names worldwide. The same can be said of various moves, abilities, and so on in the franchise. For example, the Unaware ability inPokemonwould be more directly translated from Japanese as Airhead, while the Storm Drain ability would come from Pump Priming.
