No one understands Gholdengo, a Pokemon introduced inPokemon Scarlet and Violet,or where it comes from, and this Christmas-themed drawing captures that perfectly. Gimmighoul first appeared inPokemon GOahead of the release ofPokemon Scarlet and Violet, and it was an uncatchable thing that ran around the screen collecting coins. That makes sense; once it gets enough coins it evolves into Gholdengo whose golden body is actually 1,000 Gimmighoul coins stacked together.
Gholdengo is a greedy ghost. Because it loves metal coins and is a ghost, it’s a Ghost/Steel-type with really good defense. It looks like a cross between Gumby and one of the waving inflatable guys one sees outside of car dealerships, except this one has dreads. Gholdengo is the only known Pokemon capable of using the move “Make It Rain,” a Steel-type move that scatters coins on the ground on hit. Not only will these coins hit adjacent Pokemon in group battles but if players win, they collect all the coins dropped. The amount they pick up doubles if one of the Pokemon that took part was holding an Amulet Coin.

Redditor and artist kibag0, also known as tremens, drew an image of a Pokemon Professor at work trying to decipher Gholdengo’s biology while a concerned Gengar, Rotom, and Greninja look on.Gholdengo is a money-centric Pokemon, which is difficult to explain in terms of physiognomy. Gengar is also a Ghost-type which gives the image aNightmare Before Christmasvibe. The poor Rotom is being used as a centrifuge, which explains why it looks so nauseous from all the spinning. Greninja is the only one of the Professor’s Pokemon besides the Sableye on his shoulder that’s hard at work.
If the Professor has figured anything out about Gholdengo or not is left up in the air, as he holds a flask aloft that looks full of liquid gold. The only connections it seems he made on the chalkboard was between Gholdengo, gold (Au), and the Amulet Coins.Competitively Gholdengo is gold as well; it’s a good albeit weird Pokemon. It’s not hard to see why he’s stumped, as the thing is one of the weirder Pokemon designs lately. It looks like a little alien but it’s just a money-grubbing ghost.
Gholdengo is literally a ghost possessing a bunch of melted down coins, which makes it seem like kibag0 is implying that substance is what’s inside the glowing flask. Whatever properties those coins have, they must have some properties that make them special toGimmighoul and Gholdengo.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violetare available now on Nintendo Switch.
