AlthoughSkyrimis pretty much what everyone is still talking about these days, 10 years since releasing, there are plenty who still fondly remember the likes ofThe Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, not to mentionMorrowindbefore that, and even earlier titles in the series. Asone of the bestElder Scrollsgames out there,Oblivionwas a huge release for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 generation, and despite the fact that it looks rather dated, it’s still got a dedicated fan base. So dedicated are some of the people in the community, that someone has been looking to bring the 16-year-old title into the modern gaming era.

Since 2012,Skyblivionhas been in development, which aims to recreate the entirety ofOblivionusing theSkyrimengine, and recently, the team has released some new screenshots from the full conversion mod. These new images show a rather moody interior, with a Khajiit stealthily moving about, though it’s not quite clear exactly which location is being shown. In general, it’s looking pretty impressive.

Sadly, there still doesn’t appear to be any release date yet, but theSkyblivionteam do give update notifications every so often. With it now in its tenth year of development, many may be hoping that it’s coming close to completion. What is known, however, is that it will be 100% free as and when it does get released, though fans will need official copies of bothOblivionandSkyrim. It will also be “modular,” which means players will get to decide which specific components they want to install.

From its humble beginnings all those years ago,the development ofSkyblivionhas been an interesting one so far, from it originally being a tech demo, to now having a whole team dedicated to its full creation. These new screenshots show that there is still progress being made, and this only teases things further for those who have been waiting for updates. Hopefully word will come soon about a possible launch window.

Whilefans are getting impatient overElder Scrolls 6, many are still getting a lot of mileage out ofSkyrimand even older games in the series. Skyblivionhas the chance to introduceOblivionto new audiences, breathe some new life into it, and showcase the immense dedication that it takes to engage in a project of this magnitude. In any case, it’s certainly exciting for those who are waiting for it to finally drop.
