As Bungie continues to grow the universe ofDestiny 2, the studio has not been shy about pulling from the deepest parts of its lore to build the in-game narrative experience. Characters and events only spoken about in the lore, previously, are regularly finding their way into the main game and are causing more theories to arise from the game’s lore community about what may be on the horizon. This continues to be the case inside the game’s latest season,Season of the Haunted, as a new glaive has the lore community talking again about one of its longest-standing mysteries.

Season of the Haunted is the current season of content forDestiny 2and sees the return of Calus' Leviathan, now hanging ominously in orbit around the Moon. Guardians join Eris Morn, Crow, Zavala, and Empress Caiatl in investigating the massive ship overrun by darkness and nightmares after somehow communing with the dormant Pyramid ship discovered under the Moon’s surface in 2019’s Shadowkeep. Crow, Zavala, and Caiatl also find themselves haunted by nightmares of their past and must confront these in hopes of stopping Calus from following in Rhulk’s footsteps and becoming a disciple of The Witness.

However, the new glaive from Season of the Haunted appears to suggest another disciple ofThe Witnessmay be a mysterious character who has stumped the Destiny lore community for nearly five years – Nezarec. The glaive, Nezarec’s Whisper, is the focus of Reddit user birdsong04’s post, saying the weapon’s lore confirms this mysterious character is real and was connected to The Witness. Bird goes on to suggest the “Final God of Pain” was the disciple who held power over the Lunar Pyramid and defected from The Witness at some point before The Collapse.

YouTuber MyNameIsByf also spoke about the Nezarec and Nezarec’s Whisper in one of his latest videos, echoing similar theories to Bird’s post.

Given how little informationBungiehas given about Nezarec, it isn’t surprising the lore community’s interest is piqued thanks to this new glaive. Nezarec has only been mentioned by name twice over the last five years, and one of those references is questionable given the character it came from. The first time was as the namesake of Nezarec’s Sin, an exotic warlock helmet, where the lore tab speaks of this hated god of pain.

The second was in the lore bookA Drifter’s Gambit, whereThe Driftersuggests to the famous hunter Shin Malphur that he visited the “fourth tomb of Nezarec.” However, Drifter is a character known for exaggerating or outright lying about parts of his past; he can not be considered a reliable source.

That said, players can argue Bungie may be planting new seeds for the character to make their in-game debut in the near future. It wouldn’t be the first time Bungie has done this, either, as several characters seen in-game over the last two years were first introduced in the lore. One of the most notable isEramis, who was first mentioned in the lore as the mind behind the Fallen’s attempted theft of the Outbreak Prime in the Zero Hour exotic mission. Only time will tell if Nezarec ends up getting similar treatment or if they will remain a mystery that continues to haunt theDestinylore community years from now.

Destiny 2is currently available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
