Video game hardware company 8BitDo has revealed a new mod kit which allows gamers to convert their Nintendo 64 controllers into fully Switch-compatible gamepads. The DIY kit allows the original wired N64 controllers to gain Bluetooth functionality, meaning they work wirelessly, and also features several other modern upgrades to the iconic controller.Founded in 2013, 8BitDo is a third-party technology company which specializes in gaming peripherals. In its decade of existence, the company has created controllers and other products for many different consoles and generations, whether it be modding older controllers or offering designs of its own. The mod kit also includes 8BitDo’s Hall Effect Joystick. For those who may not be aware, Hall Effect joysticks utilize a magnetic system, which means the joystick never actually touches the controller’s sensor, increasing the lifespan of the stick and mitigating issues like the Switch’s notorious Joy-Con drift, althougha potential new joystick design from Nintendocould solve the long-running and prevalent problem.

In terms of more modern upgrades for the famous N64 controller, the 8BitDo Mod Kit for Original N64 Controller also includes a rechargeable battery which is integrated directly into the replacement N64 Rumble Pak. In addition to rumbling and acting as the controller’s power source, the Rumble Pak features a USB-C charging port as well as additional control buttons.
