With less than a month until the summeranimeseason starts, fans won’t have a lot of time to binge these series and catch up, but this should help give the need to know info on the upcoming shows. Whether it requires three seasons of catching up or a simple 12 episodes, this list should catch fans up on thetop most anticipated anime of summer.
Yofukashi No Uta (Call Of The Night)
Call of the Nightis starting off this list at number 5, and the only reason why its lower is that unlike the other anticipated anime it’s not a sequel or a season 2. Call of the Night is a story about Japanese middle school student Kou Yamori who has insomnia. He has become bored by the responsibilities of his day-to-day life and opted to seek freedom through the night, as it calls out to him. During one of his nightly walks he meets a girl named Nazuna Nanakusa and without giving away too much, the girl begins to show him what it means to be a nightwalker.

Off the aesthetic of the main girl alone this show will draw anime fans in but, the unique method of storytelling and use of the night to create, and eerie vibe will be sure to resonate with those who also prefer to stay up late doing whatever with their friends or family before they have to wake up and be an adult once more and answer to their responsibilities. Despite being the only anime on this list that isn’t a sequel it is one which shouldnot be slept on (Pun 100% intended)
Rent-A-Girlfriend (Season 2)
For an animethat aired around two years ago, its amazing how it manages to live rent-free in our minds (pun intended again). The biggest draw the anime has is the main heroine who was nominated for best girl in the Crunchyroll 2021 anime awards.Rent-A-Girlfriendis a standard ecchi romcom anime that follows a male protagonist as he develops a harem. Kazuya got dumped by his girlfriend and then ends up renting out a girlfriend through an app. Through an unforeseen series of comical events, Kazuya ends up needing to maintain a fake relationship with the girl, Chizuru Mizuhara. This leads to him meeting and getting involved with several other rent-a-girlfriends.
The story is quite a refreshing take as it follows an adult cast of college kids as they deal with adult issues and themes. They deal with regular college troubles, family issues and worst of all, his toxic ex trying to ruin his fake relationship. It’sdefinitely a plus for many older anime fanswishing to have a protagonist dealing with the same problems they face. This is a fantastic romantic comedy and coming of age story many are looking out for.
Overlord 4
Despite the massive amount of mostly mediocre isekai anime,Overlordstill holds a seatas one of the best iseakito come out within the genre and many have been waiting for its season 4. It’s been four years since the last season of animes that have not had a sequel for years are getting them this season and that long wait is definitely paying off as it earnsOverlordthe third slot for most anticipated this season. However, this just goes to show how stacked this season is.

Overlordhas the premise of most isekai. The protagonist is an overpowered gamer who spent years in an MMO and when the game shut down he was trapped inside it but now transferred to a fantasy world. The twist is, he’s the bad guy. Ainz Ooan Gowl has done some of the most messed up things seen from an anime protagonist, ranging from torture, murder, staging a massacre, or literally summoning monsters to crush and eat thousands of people alive. He has conducted experiments on live people and used horrible means to gain the knowledge he needs to conquer the world he now resides in. He is not a good person, but that is also what makes the story so interesting to watch.
Made In Abyss (Season 2)
It’s a little bizarre that an anime with their season one ranked as 53rd best anime on MyAnimeList, is in the top 100 for most popular animes on MAL and, is the anime of the year for the 2018 Crunchyroll awards, and yet is still only the second most anticipated anime this season. It will have been 5 years since this anime’s season one dropped and fans have been waiting withgreat anticipation for season 2. In a world where every season we are gettingIsekai after isekai, a regular fantasy storywas quite refreshing for the fanbase, and especially one with a darker more serious tone than most fantasy series we are given.
The story iscentered around the Abyss, a gaping chasm stretching down into the depths of the earth, filled with mysterious creatures and relics from a time long past. Our protagonist, Riko, is the daughter of a white whistle diver, the highest rank given to those who are tasked with diving into the abyss and exploring the contents within. This story is a thrilling action and adventure story with intense moments leaving fans at the edge of their seat or downright terrified for what’s to come. Be sure to watch the movie which came out in 2019 too!

The Devil Is A Part-Timer (Season 2)
Anyone who’s been in the anime community for a while has heard someone say “When Devil is a part-timer Season 2?” It has been 9 years since season 1’s release and in the minds and hearts of many fans there had been a silent acceptance that it was not going to come back. Yet here it is,The Devil is a Part-Timerhas returnedto give fans the season 2 they have craved for so long.
The Devil is a Part-Timeris the 67th most popular anime on My Anime List and for very good reason. In an era long before theoversaturation of isekai anime, there was an isekai comedy that parodied the genre before the genre was even prevalent enough to be parodied. However rather than a normal high school kid being sent to or reincarnated into a fantasy world, we have fantasy characters transported and trapped in our world. This anime is absolutely hilarious, while still offering lots of action and romance for the viewer to sink into and is not only the most anticipated anime of the year but a potential contender for anime of the year all around.
