Mortal Kombatcreator Ed Boon was recently inducted intothe AIAS Hall of Fame at the 25th Annual D.I.C.E. awards, placing him alongside other influential members of the gaming industry. Boon, who co-createdMortal Kombatwith John Tobias, has always been coy about the production of new games going on at NetherRealm Studios, especially when it comes toMortal Kombat.
Mortal Kombatfirst launched in 1992 by Midway Games and rapidly went on to become a massive global franchise. The adventures ofcharacters like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade have become staples in the video game zeitgeist, and the series gruesome fatalities' have become iconic video game moments that players have not soon forgotten.

The latest entry in the series,Mortal Kombat 11, was released in 2019 to great critical success, withreviews forMortal Kombat 11praising the stellar gameplay. However, with the game no longer receiving more DLC characters or updates, many now look forward to when NetherRealm Studios will unveil its next project.
In an interview with Game Informer following the D.I.C.E. Awards, Ed Boon was asked about what’s next for NeatherRealm, and stated that while he is aware that there is a lot of speculation for his next game, he has assured fans that the wait will be worth it. While Boon didn’t clarify whether the title would be the nextMortal Kombator another entry in theirDC Comics fighting game seriesInjustice, he name-dropped both titles, indicating it could be one of those two franchises. Then again, it could also be something completely different and unexpected.
It’s hard to say whether the next game on NetherRealm’s radar is the nextMortal Kombat, as Boon himself has noted that both the series and the aforementionedInjusticehave swapped releases of their respective titles back and forth ever sinceMortal Kombat 9in 2011. However, with the booming popularity ofthe recentMortal Kombatfilm, which has been green lit for a sequel, it makes a lot of sense to capitalize on the series' current success.
That being said,Mortal Kombathas always seen great success no matter when the next entry in the series arrives. While many fans hope that the wait for the next game in the series isn’t too long, hopefully Boon’s reassuring words fill fans with plenty of hope to see the next installment on the horizon very soon.
