Multiple video game developers and publishers including Take-Two Interactive and Electronic Arts have released their financial reports for the first quarter of fiscal year 2021, running from April to June 2020. Among them areCapcom, which had its biggest first quarter everamid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, and a big facet of that success was continually high sales numbers forMonster Hunter World.
Monster Hunter Worldhas sold over 16 million cumulative units since launch, and the game’sIceborneexpansion has sold 5.8 million units according to the financial report published today. That means the expansion alone has sold almost a million additional copies since August 09, 2025, when a press release from Capcom’s Investor Relations announcedMonster Hunter World: Icebornepassed five million units soldworldwide.

Since that Investor Relations press release came out, overall sales for theMonster Hunterseries, which started in 2004, have risen from 62 to 64 million units — more than theMega ManandDevil May Cryseries combined based on comparisons published in the first quarter 2021 report.Monster Hunterhas also sold more than the entireStreet Fighterfranchise, currently at 45 million units. The only Capcom property listed with higher lifetime sales isResident Evilat 103 million units — thoughResident Evil 3 Remakesold significantly less thanResident Evil 2 Remake.
The success ofMonster Hunter World: Iceborne, which contributed to the company earning ¥23,722 million in net sales this first quarter, has not gone unnoticed. Capcom’s ongoing action role-playing game has received new title updates since it released, most recently adding in the Elder Dragon Alatreon, and events like this summer’sMonster Hunter WorldSizzling Spice Festare still being introduced.
ThoughMonster Hunter Worldcontinues to receive updates, the game is noticeably not available on the Nintendo Switch. The lastMonster Huntergame to be published on Nintendo’s hardware wasMonster Hunter Generations Ultimatein 2018, though the company confirmed its intention to make a new game in the series for a younger audience on Switch during its shareholders' meeting this June.
Capcom has also announced plans to expand theMonster Hunterbrand outside of its popular video games. A movie based on the franchise is in development that stars Milla Jovovich — who also played Alice in theResident Evilmovie franchise that ran from 2002 to 2017. However, theMonster Huntermovie was delayed to April 2021due to complications from the ongoing pandemic.
