Tariq Hassan, the Customer Experience Officer for McDonald’s, emphasized the restaurant’s focus on nostalgia and comfort when it came to creating the dessert, stating that it is meant to honor the “grandma-figures” in people’s lives. Hassan makes the assertion that grandmothers have had a hand in influencing various facets of human culture already, and the new McFlurry is McDonald’s way of repaying them for the special memories they have provided for so many.

McDonald’s Is Honoring Grandmothers Across the Nation

The new ice cream treat is not the only grandma celebration McDonald’s is doing, however, as the company also announced two brand-newcovers of famous songsfrom the older generations. Specifically, Marvin Gaye’s “How Sweet It Is” is getting a remake from Remi Wolf while Puerto Rican singer/songwriter Jay Wheeler is coming up with a new take on the Latin classic “Piel Canela,” both of which are coming out day-and-date with the McFlurry on all music platforms.

Even that isn’t the end, though, asNew York City residentscan enjoy the “Grandma’s McFlurry Mobile,” which has already been patrolling the city streets since May 17 and will be making stops at senior living centers throughout today. The McFlurry Mobile is essentially a McDonald’s-branded ice cream truck selling the new McFlurry for a limited time.

Lastly, the companyis also making donationsto the elderly mental health organization Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly, which works to combat loneliness and depression among seniors. The tail end of May is the time to celebrate grandmas worldwide and repay all their childhood trips to McDonald’s with a treat all their own starting this week on May 21.
