Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s Sunset Wilds track is missing a feature seen in the previous iterations of the track: the sun no longer sets during the race. Following the release of Wave 5 of the Booster Course Pass, numerous gamers have been checking out the latest tracks. Unfortunately, many of these fans are disappointed by the strange omission from Sunset Wilds inMario Kart 8 Deluxe.

WhileMario Kart 8 Deluxeis an enhanced port ofMario Kart 8for the Wii U, the Switch version has continued to receive new content years after its release. 40 remade and original tracks have already been released through the Booster Course Pass, with Wave 5 adding a mix of nostalgic classics,Mario Kart Tourcourses, and the new Squeaky Clean Sprint track. These existing tracks from the series have received visual updates forMario Kart 8 Deluxe, making the omission of the setting sun from Sunset Wilds more glaring.

Since the release ofMario Kart 8 Deluxe’s DLC Wave 5, gamers have taken to social media to highlight the missing sunset on the Sunset Wilds track. For context, Sunset Wilds is a desert-themed course that first appeared inMario Kart: Super Circuiton the Game Boy Advanceand later came toMario Kart Tour. One of the significant highlights of the course in those games was that the sun would set as the race progressed. However, this no longer happens in the Switch version, with the change puzzling gamers. In fact, some have claimed that this day/night cycle helped set the original apart from the plethora of other tracks in the series. While the track has better visual fidelity compared to its appearance in the GBA title, many miss the setting the sun and racing at night on the final lap.

Even though removing the different times of day from the Sunset Wilds track is doubtlessly disappointing for many nostalgic fans, a change could be made in the coming months. In fact, Nintendo previously madechanges to Coconut Mall, a classic course fromMario Kart Wii, following its release as part of Wave 1 of the Booster Course Pass. In that case, the developer added motion to the cars in the parking lot towards the end of the track.

Time will tell if Nintendo listens to those upset about the missing sunset in Sunset Wilds. Regardless, the developer is not through delivering content to the game.Mario Kart 8 Deluxestill has Wave 6, the final part of the Booster Course Pass DLC, to release. While players will likely have to wait a while to experience the final round of tracks, it will be interesting to see what surprises Nintendo has left to deliver to themanyMario Kartfansstill playing the game.
