James Cameron continues to drop tidbits of information about futureAvatarsequels. Cameron said eachAvatarfilm carries on with the same adversary.
There have been several enemies in theAvatarsaga. Humans are raining down on Pandora, ready to colonize it. While some humans are friendly, such as Norm (Joel David Moore), and want the Na’vi to live in peace, most humans are concerned with finding a new home for the species because Earth is dying.Avatar 3will also show off a darker side to the Na’vi, presumably involving Na’vi villains.

In an interview withB TV Korea, Cameron spoke about theAvatarfranchise and its future. “It’s not like a superhero story where there’s a new villain with every film," Cameron said. “Same guy, right? Same adversary through the whole thing. But how he evolves is also very interesting once we bring in additional adversaries as we go along. Additional adversaries and additional allies.”
The “same guy” Cameron refers to is likelyStephen Lang’s Colonel Quaritch, whose evolution was apparent throughout the first two films. Quaritch is also the only villain that both films have in common, and if the series is going to have the same adversary, he’s already been set up as a foil to Jake Sully (Sam Worthington). He was last seen inAvatar: The Way of Waterriding off for parts unknown, and he now has an advantage over other human antagonists because he can commune with Eywa and bond with the native creatures of Pandora.
As for the “additional adversaries” Cameron mentioned, he may be referring tothe Ash People he’s teased forAvatar 3. If Cameron wants to explore the darker side of the Na’vi, then the Ash People may be a more antagonistic force of Na’vi. While the Sea and Forest People Na’vi are okay with the idea of living alongside humans, perhaps the Ash People will take a more militant stance and want to kill all humans (including any Na’vi with human ancestry, such as Jake Sully’s children).
There’s alsoEdie Falco’s General Frances Ardmore. Though her role is small, she leads the human contingent colonizing Pandora from Bridgehead City. She also showed a willingness to torture information out of a child, and the character is never dealt with inAvatar: The Way of Water.She may be one of these additional adversaries.
