Halo 3is now available on PC as part of 343 Industrie’s porting ofThe Master Chief Collectionto the platform. By all accounts, it’s a great PC port even compared to the otherHaloPC releases this past year. It should be no surprise then that modders are already experimenting with alteringHalo 3, either for fun or function. One such example is a new mod that turnsHalo 3from first-person into third person, replete with a high-quality Master Chief model.
Developed by modder parapara, the mod is straightforward in its use. It turns theHalo 3story campaign into athird-person experience, no more and no less. It’s also usable in cooperative play, but all players will need to have the mod installed for it to work.

According to the developer, the third-person works by utilizing some functionality that already exists withinHalo 3. The detached mounted turret inHalo 3already pushes the perspective inHalo 3into third-person. As such, it’s just a matter of retaining that third-person regardless of whether the player has adetached mounted turretin their hands or not.
That’s also why theHalo 3mod’s developer doesn’t believe it would be as easy to accomplish inHalo: Combat EvolvedorHalo 2. There’s simply no easy way to implement third-person without a major development effort. And so that’s why a third-person mod doesn’t exist for those games, as far as the modder knows.
Unfortunately, theHalo 3third-person mod isn’t perfect yet. One mod user says that it’s currently impossible to zoom-in with weapons while using thethird-person mod. In other words, since third-person is forced all the time players can’t aim down the sights or use scopes. This can hopefully be fixed, with the developer selectively turning off third-person when players try to zoom in. But if it is possible, it’ll likely take time.
What’s essential is thatHalo 3players now have the opportunity to play in third-person. It’s not just a fun feature, but also an accessibility option that will allow PC gamers who may otherwise have been unable to playHalo 3to try the game out. It may even be something343 Industriesshould consider officially supporting inHalo Infiniteand future games.
Halo 3is available now on PC, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
