Bungie’s latest This Week At Bungie blog post has given players a decent amount of insight on the future ofDestiny 2in both the coming seasons as well as the upcoming Year 4 of the game. The outreach post introduced a number of new concepts, such as arevamped seasonal infusion system, as well as a change coming to seasonal drops that may please fans who have had trouble with RNG in the past.

Previously,Destiny 2’s seasonal weapons came through Weapon Bounties, which required players to complete a number of challenges in order to gain specific rewards depending on the bounty completed. However, withBungie reworking bountiesas a way of staving off bounty fatigue, the decision has been made to move away from these sometimes tedious challenges and move back to what players are familiar with, engrams.

Naturally, moving from bounties with specific rewards to a new type of engram that gives a random reward might regularly have an even more negative impact on fans, but Bungie has a plan for giving players the ability to give their own input. Players will be able to focus the seasonal engrams in order to specify the types of items that they want to find in the engram, trimming some of the randomness from the rewards. Seeing how poorly received some recent weapon quests have been, such as the recentlynerfed Felwinter’s Lie quest, stepping away from some of these multi-level quests and bounties may be the correct choice for the future ofDestiny 2.

Additionally, this system will work in tandem with the Season Pass, offering players who buy the rewards package a more detailed chance to fine tune their rewards from these Seasonal Engrams. Players who don’t opt for the pass will be given much more limited options for focusing these engrams, but will still have the opportunity to narrow down the loot pool to include types of gear they would prefer. So, while the Season Pass will offer a more complete use of the Focusing tool in later seasons ofDestiny 2, all players will still feel the benefits of theimproved loot system.

Whether or not these new engrams, referred to by Bungie as simply [REDACTED] Engrams, will be a better way forward than the current weapon bounties is still up in the air. Bungie has been working lately torevampDestiny 2’s loot systemin the wake of what has become a rather underwhelming Season of the Worthy, and changing loot pools might be the way to go to bring back some good faith from the fanbase. It’ll be an uphill battle to Year 4 for Bungie, and some of the changes laid out in the latest This Week At Bungie may be what determines the future of the series.

Destiny 2is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
