Supergiant’s foray into Greek mythology delighted players withHades' fresh take on old stories, while still staying true to the heart of the characters in those stories, with each one remaining recognizable and iconic.Hades 2promises to bring even more depth to the mythology with its emphasis on magic and witches, something that was mentioned in its predecessor but barely explored. With Hecate as a major character and Melinoe as the protagonist,Hades 2is set to once again bring a new perspective to Greek mythology.

According to theHades 2trailer, the antagonist is Chronos, the Titan of Time. TheTitans were Greek mythology’s ruling godsbefore the Olympians, and were the children of Uranus, the personification of the Sky, and Gaia, the personification of the Earth. The twelve Titans were Theia, Rhea, Themis, Mnemosyne, Phoebe, Tethys, Oceanus, Coeus, Crius, Hyperion, Iapetus, and Chronos. Chronos defeated his father Uranus to become the ruler; the other Titans fell into their own roles to serve Chronos, while Rhea married him.

The Story Behind the Titans in Hades 2

Chronos had six children: Demeter, Hestia, Hera, Hades, Poseidon, and Zeus. However, just like Uranus, Chronos was destined to fall at the hands of one of his children. To avoid this, he ate them all as they were born. Rhea tricked him into swallowing a rock instead of their last child, Zeus, who was free to grow up and freed his siblings from their father’s belly. They launched a rebellion against the Titan of Time and overthrew him, locking him in Tartarus and taking their place on Olympus as the new rulers, with Zeus as the King of the Gods.

The Titans are only mentioned inHadesand don’t make an actual appearance in the game. Hades mentions his own father, the war with the Titans is brought up several times in reference to Zagreus' weapons, and Titans' Blood is found throughout the Underworld.Hades 2has changed this status quo, however, and withChronos as the antagonist ofHades 2it appears that he’s regained some of his power and used it to capture his son, Hades.

The Titans Who Could Be Allies in Hades 2

Despite the Titans' fearsome reputation,Hades 2’s Melinoe might have unlikely alliesin Chronos' siblings. Despite the fact that they’re Titans, not all of them supported Chronos and many tales depicted them interacting with the gods even after the Titan war with the Olympians. One example is the Titan Themis, who is mentioned several times for her wisdom, and made several important prophecies throughout several stories including the Trojan Epic War Cycle.

One of the most likely Titans to feature as an ally is Mnemosyne, who was said to live near a pool in the Underworld. Unlike the other Titans, Mnemosyne was frequently invoked in Greek stories such as theIliadbecause of her status as a goddess of memory. Considering Melinoe’s status as a bringer of nightmares, and her connection to memory and the Underworld, Mnemosyne may be theTitan most likely to helpHades 2’s Melinoein her quest to defeat Chronos, perhaps even as an unexpected mentor figure.

Another possible Titan to appear is Phoebe, who is the mother ofHades 2’s Hecate. Not unlike Hecate and Melinoe, Phoebe also has strong connections to the moon. Phoebe was one of the original masters of the Oracle of Delphi before she gave it to Apollo, who will also make his debut inHades 2. As a largely benevolent Titan in Greek mythology, it’s possible she’ll have a role as an ally to Melinoe.
