Grand Theft Auto Onlinerecently received one of its biggest updates of the entire year in the form ofThe Contract, which is set some odd years after the events ofGrand Theft Auto 5. TheGTA OnlineContractupdate featuresGrand Theft Auto 5protagonist Franklinas one of the central characters that gives players' characters missions to complete, and some dialogue in one of the missions seemingly confirms the base game’s canon ending. Please note that this article will haveSPOILERSforGrand Theft Auto 5, so proceed with caution.

For those that may not recall,Grand Theft Auto 5has multiple endings, with different characters that can live or die based on what players choose to do at the end. One choice will leave Trevor dead, while another will leave Michael dead. The third optionGTA 5players can pick makes it so all three of the main playable characters survive the events of the game, and this has long been assumed to be the canon ending.

It’s now been more or less confirmed by theGTA Online Contractupdatethat this is indeed the canon ending forGrand Theft Auto 5. During one of the missions in the game, players wind up driving through the movie set area in a golf cart withn Franklin riding shotgun. Franklin remarks that he knows one of the movie producers that works there, and while it’s possible that he’s referring to someone else, he’s almost certainly talking about Michael, who takes a job as a movie producer at the end ofGTA 5.

Of course, this only applies to Michael, and so one could argue that it’s possible for Trevor’s death to be the canonGTA 5ending. However, theGTA Online Smuggler’s Runupdateconfirmed that Trevor is still alive as well. Between this Michael revelation and what we already knew about Trevor, it’s safe to say that theGTA 5canon ending is indeed the one where Franklin, Michael, and Trevor all survive the events of the game.

Now that theGTA 5canon ending has been cemented, fans are no doubt interested in seeing what’s next for the franchise. We know that theGrand Theft Auto 5next-gen portsare on the horizon, but fans are growing anxious forGTA 6. Unfortunately, there’s been no news onGrand Theft Auto 6from any official sources, and the best guess is that the game is still years away from release.

Grand Theft Auto 5is out now for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
