Quakemay have released in 1996, but the game has aged really well. Shooting through gothic creatures across Lovecraftian inspired levels has never been more fun, and this version brings with it some major updates that only make it better. New expansion packs, new modes, mod support, and a revamped multiplayer have made this old game feel young again.

id Software releasedQuakea couple of years afterDoom 2, and it helped further cement the studio as a force to be reckoned with. It was built on the brand-newQuakeengine, and its gameplay was heavily inspired by theDoomgames. Instead of bringing players to hell,Quakebrought them to a world inspired by gothic fiction and H.P. Lovecraft. This new world proved very successful for the studio, and it would go on to spawn an entire franchise thatwould help change the FPS genre forever.
The story ofQuakeis pretty simple, but that is part of the charm. Players take control of an unmanned protagonist who is sent into a portal to stop codenamed Quake. They must traverse multiple dimensions to track down magical runes that are the key to stopping the enemy and saving Earth. They will shoot through many different grotesque monsters and across 30 different Lovecraftian levels as they try to reach their goal. These levels are split up into four different episodes. Each episode represents a dimension that the player can travel to, and each episode consists of around seven to eight different levels. There is also one secret level per episode thatthrowsQuake’sgameplay on its headwith wild challenges.
After an episode is completed, players are returned to the hub level where they can select a new episode. Players start fresh at the beginning of each episode, and none of the previously collected items come with them. The goal of each episode is to fight through monsters until players are able to reach a magic rune, and the final puzzle is revealed once players are able to acquire all four runes. Once players complete that puzzle,their time inQuakesingleplayer is over.
The singleplayer is a lot of fun, and it can get very challenging at time. It has also been visually enhanced, and players are able to access even more gothic mayhem through four different expansion packs chock-full of content. The game also includes a brand-new horde mode so that players can test themselves against endless waves of enemies, andQuakehas mod supportso that anyone can change up their game if they choose.
Singleplayer is not the only thing thatQuakeoffers, as it also features online and local multiplayer. Up to four players can fight through the campaign together online or locally, and up to eight can compete against each other in retro-style combat online, while only four can do so locally. This version also features full crossplay so that players can experience the fun ofQuaketogether no matter what console they bought it on. Everything good aboutQuake’sexciting singleplayer and revolutionary multiplayerhas only been made better here, and genre fans should definitely give it a whirl.
