From controversial twists to unsatisfying conclusions, theFar Crygames have had their fair share of both praise and criticism when it comes to how they wrap up their stories. One thing is for sure,Far Crygames' endings always bring something fresh and new. They are often the focus of much fan excitement and dismay.
We will consider the endings of every mainlineFar Crygame, assessing how fun and unique the ending was, whether it was satisfying, whether it wrapped up the story well, and overall how it stands on its own as an ending.
This list includes heavy spoilersUpdated on June 05, 2025, by Gerardo Molina:The Far Cry franchise has been around for a very long time, and throughout its lifespan, many great titles have been released. Most of the games in this series have compelling stories, great combat mechanics, and an overall struggle for freedom and justice. While not all of them have an epic conclusion, several of the titles on the list do, captivating players and giving them a satisfying close to the story they just completed. Each title is ranked based on the journey that leads players to the ending and how things develop once they have that final confrontation with the various interesting villains in the franchise.
Far Cry 2is consideredone of the better gamesin the series, and of course, it has multiple endings, but depending on the ending players get they can be left feeling either completely underwhelmed or at least unsatisfied. In the basic ending, the player kills jackals, and that’s about it; nothing else really happens, and players are left completely unsatisfied. The second ending is unlocked if the player refuses to kill Jackal; there’s an extra mission. This mission is well-designed and quite fun, but overall the ending is basic and underwhelming. It is, however, much better than the first option.
The final ending offers something a lot more like a properFar Cryending, the main character stays behind and fights in the war, which comes off as somewhat hypocritical and an odd decision. Whilst not well-developed or explored, this is still the best ending in the game.
During their journey, players can take control of a mercenary, who can be selected from a pool of nine available mercenaries. The game’s setting follows the franchise’s established formula, as it takes place in locations ranging from deserts to savannahs and jungles. For a game of its time,Far Cry 2offered tons of different weapons for a total of 30 firearms, including pistols, rocket launchers, sniper rifles, mortars, and assault rifles. It’s also possible to use machetes to deliver powerful killing blows. One of the most important key mechanics in this title is infiltrating encampments, where players will be able to find valuable supplies to use in their playthrough.
The first game in the series set up a solid foundation, the game was intriguing, the gameplay slick and the story flowed well.Far Cryhad a decent set of endings ranging from basic but well done to something more expected of the franchise. The first ending was simple, the good guy defeats the evil Dr. Krieger and escapes the war-torn island; everyone’s happy. In the second ending, Jack Carver decides to stay on the island so he can be with Valerie Constantine; somewhat of a bitter-sweet ending, it signifies that people can’t always get what they want and the need for sacrifice.
The final and best ending happens if players lose, Carver dies, and the island is destroyed by a nuclear bomb. Shocking, sudden, and brave, it’s a solid but simple ending in terms of series standards.
Like other titles in the series, the originalFar Cryis set in an open-ended environment in an archipelago in the South Pacific. Players will have to make their way through various locations, which are predominantly populated by tropical rainforest vegetation, where they can hide to strike at their enemies in the moment they least expect. The game is designed to give enemies a tactical advantage over players and the challenge is to still have the upper hand regardless of these insurmountable odds through the use of the various elements available at players’ disposal. The original Far Cry also has a solid multiplayer system, which has three multiplayer modes including Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Assault.
Far Cry: Primalis a lesson in history; players take control of Takkar, the last surviving member ofhis hunting group…in the Stone Age. The first two endings in this game are both decent; they’re satisfying and bring about an understandable and reasonable conclusion to the story. In the first, Takkar brings peace and tranquility tothe prehistoric Wenja tribeafter overcoming the nefarious Ull. The second ending is relatively similar, but importantly, Takkar spares Ull.
The third ending really stands out as being gruesome and tragic. Ull kills Takkar, the player is defeated, and the Wenja tribe returns to a life of servitude and misery. The ending is quite unexpected and grim and stands out as one of the better endings in the series overall. Similar to other titles in its franchise,Far Cry Primalalso offers players an open-world environment. While the traditional gunplay that had made the franchise famous up to this point is not present in this particular title, it’s still great fun to play as players make their way through the primitive world, where they must survive against insurmountable odds posed by dangerous wild animals and other tribes. It’s possible to lure different wildlife using bait, so players can tame predators and feed on what they catch. Tamed animals can be summoned as companions using basic commands to help players during a battle.
This game features one of thebetter recent Ubisoft villainsin Joseph Seed, and it is all around a very solid package.Far Cry 5endings are done really well; there’s a lot of variety, and none of them are basic. Each of them leaves the player with a sense of tragedy and shock as to what exactly just happened. There is, of course, a trademark early ending as well.
The two main endings either feature the main character walking away from the violence and bloodshed that frequents Hope County,leaving the cult and Seedto carry on. The good ending isn’t especially positive either, the player and his allies continue to fight Seed and his influence, but they aren’t exactly shown to succeed.
Unlike previous installments in the franchise,Far Cry 5allows players to customize their character as opposed to simply having to play with a predetermined one. Another great thing that provides an extra layer of immersion in this game is that the main character is silent and does not have any kind of voiced dialogue. This allows players to put themselves in their character’s shoes even more, making gameplay interesting. Players are not giving much indication regarding what they have to do or where they have to go, forcing players to figure things out for themselves, which can be fun for some, but not as much for others.
New Dawnisn’t considered to be that great of a game, it received mixed reviews from fans and critics alike, but picking up directly fromFar Cry 5,it did have some decent endings. The ‘good’ ending was extremely cookie cutter. But the ‘bad’ ending where the player kills Mickey and Lou shows the Captain’s coup and how the people of Hope County are living under duress. The secret ending tied to an in-game side mission leads players to encounter Joseph Seed and leads to a veryinterestingconclusion.
Far Cry 3is arguably thebest game in the series, featuring one of the most iconic villains produced by Ubisoft, Vaas. The game is bold and bloody. It features one of the most unexpected endings where Jason Brody can choose to join the secondary villain of the game, Citra, and become the leader of the tribe. It is implied Jason kills his friends for this to occur, and the game ends, featuring a romantic scene between Jason and Citra.
Far Cry 3also has a trademark early ending where a hallucinating Brody can shoot Vaas and end the game. Overall, all ofFar Cry 3’sendings bring something new to the table and stand to prove why it is one of the best games in the series. Throughout the game, players can use firearms such as assault rifles, sniper rifles, grenade launchers, explosives, and rocket launchers, as well as landmines and grenades to set up traps for their unsuspecting enemies. Another interesting aspect about this game is that there’s a complex skill tree that players can upgrade as they progress through the game and unlock different abilities. Following the formula of its predecessors,Far Cry 3is also set in a large environment full of vegetation that players can use to their advantage to get the upper hand over their enemies and kill them through the use of Stealth and tactical maneuvers.
WhileFar Cry 6doesn’t exactly do anything special in terms of endings, they are built up really well. Both endings paint a stark picture of the violence and terror that has a hold on the island of Yara. The early ending lets the player take the boat through the blockade and walk away. Three months later players learn this decision has led to violent and terrible conflict in Yara, and the Libertad rebellion is essentially quashed.
This ending lets players make an outright cowardly and selfish choice, bordering on turning theminto the villains themselves. It is definitely a new direction forFar Cryendings and works really well. Even the good ending is quite grim and features a dark and twisted end for the primary villain and his son.
Far Cry 4is one of the most popular and exciting games in the series, featuring the enigmatic and charismatic Pagan Min, it has a variety of different endings for players to sink their teeth into. Obviously, a mention needs to be given to the most cheeky moment in recent gaming history. If, at the start of the game, the player decides to wait for Pagan Min for a little over ten minutes a cutscene plays and the game ends with Pagan and the main character getting ready to fight together. Pagan also delivers a little lecture on the player’s family history.
In the basic ending, the player kills Pagan, and an abrupt but suitable ending follows. Should the player spare Pagan in the final mission, Pagan announces the player as the King of Kyrat and takes the player to the shrine of his half-sister Lakshmana, detailing the history behind her death. In the final ending, the player can choose to initially spare Pagan, get the same story dump but then gun him down in the chopper. Each of these endings is well-thought-out, and they work fairly well. Overall,Far Cry 4has some of the best endings in the series.
