Fallouthas established itself asone of the most well-known and legendary franchises of all time. The series started off as a rich and choice-driven CRPG, before being interpreted in modern times as an open-world RPG that fans absolutely adore. Regardless of the recent treatment of this IP, there’s no denying the fact thatalmost allFalloutgames have a charm of their ownthat’s incredibly hard to resist.

That being said, there’s a vocal portion of the fanbase carried over from the original run of the series that wants the 3DFalloutgames made by Bethesda to stay true to the essence of the original. This can be achieved by carrying over the following aspects of theFalloutgames of yore that can have a major and positive impact on the quality of the franchise in modern times.

10A Stellar Narrative

If there’s one thing that the originalFalloutgames can be commended on, it’s the fact that the narrative in these games was beyond compare. It’s an area that Bethesda tends to falter in with most of their titles, with the story ofFallout 4being especially infamous in this regard.

FutureFalloutgames can definitely benefit from an excellent narrative that will keep players hooked all the way to the very end. This is especially important in RPGs that last for hundreds of hours since players might find their time to be wasted if they feel likethe main story or side contentis nothing more than a waste of time.

9Choices That Actually Matter

Choice-based gameplay is nothing new in video games, and the 3DFalloutgames — especiallyNew Vegas— end up featuring many critical choices that can alter one’s playthrough in many ways. However, the originalFalloutwas a completely different beast in this regard.

The game was full to the brim with narrative depth at every corner. Most of the choices made in the game also mattered quite a bit, making each and every playthrough feel all the more unique. This kind of change would definitely benefit modernFallouttitles and make them feel all the more unique and refreshing.

8A Deep And Engaging Dialogue System

One of the biggest downturns that the modernFalloutgames have taken stems from the dialogue system, which is nowhere near the quality of the originalFallouttitle. The sole exception to this isNew Vegas, and the fact that this game was not developed by Bethesda speaks volumes when it comes to the developer’s mettle in terms of writing for games, or the lack thereof.

It goes without saying that Bethesda’s take on theFalloutfranchise would benefit from better and more enriching dialogue. Given the massive backlash against the dialogue system ofFallout 4, one can only hope that Bethesda would take this feedback into account while developing the next single-player chapter in theFalloutseries.

7Challenging Difficulty

A big part of why most new fans of theFalloutseries simply can’t get through the originalFallouttitle is due to its immense difficulty, with each and every encounter being a massive test of the player’s strategy and preparedness. While the modernFalloutgames have certainly helped make the franchise more accessible, it has come at the cost ofdumbed-down gameplay.

While these 3DFalloutgames don’t need to be as difficult as the first title, steps can still be taken tobalance difficulty without reaching unfair levels. The gameplay of modernFalloutwould definitely benefit from these changes.

6Tactical Combat

Speaking of modernFallout’s gameplay, one has to admit that a shift to single-player combat has taken away the tactical nuance present in the original game. Mindlessly shooting enemies is only engaging for so long, before players are fatigued with the combat system.

No Combat Boundaries mod for Fallout 4

While the reinterpretation of VATS definitely kept things interesting in combat, there’s still a lot more that can be done. Giving orders to your squadmates could be a nice start, while other tactical nuances — such as aiming for weaknesses, inflicting debuffs, and the like — could be emphasized to make combat more multi-faceted in the newest titles.

5Multiple Character Builds That Are Equally Viable

One has to admit that it’s pretty much impossible to play through modernFalloutgames without investing in a player’s combat stats. Given the franchise’s roots as a deep RPG, players should ideally be able to play the role they want without being shoved into situations that can’t be resolved without killing everything in sight.

New Vegascertainly took major strides in this regard to ensure that not everything boiled down to shooting enemies — players could also either sneak around or use their persuasive skills to great effect. If Bethesda decides to implement this system in newFalloutgames, then the end result can be something truly magical.

4Quests That Can Be Approached In Multiple Ways

At the end of the day, truly great RPGs allow players to use the methods they want to take care of any problems. This was a case in the originalFallouttitles, that allowed players to tackle quests with a whole host of different methods.

The modernFalloutgames lack this multifacetedness, with most quests devolving to either talking to NPCs,fetching an item, or shooting bad guys. With better quest writing and gameplay mechanics, tackling the main and side stories of newFalloutgames will become an absolute treat.

3Unconventional Methods To Take Care Of Problems

A big part of what made the originalFalloutgames so special was the fact that a ton of quests and missions could be resolved in the most unpredictable ways possible. One such moment that has been replicated inFallout 3involves the famed destruction of Nuketown that can be triggered by the player.

However, these moments are few and far between in modernFallouttitles. Bethesda should try and up the ante when it comes to unpredictability in theFalloutseries.

2Satirical Moments To Help Take The Edge Off

Fans of the originalFallouttitle loved the game for a whole host of reasons including the ability to not take itself too seriously at times. The levity present in some moments in the originalFallouteasily forms some of the most memorable moments in the game.

Again, onlyNew Vegashas managed to nail this element down from previous games. These lighthearted moments are nonexistent in the other 3DFalloutgames, withFallout 4being an especially egregious offender in this regard.

1Endings That Feel More Substantial

The endings of bothFallout 3and4were rightfully criticized for being lazy and inconsiderate of a player’s choices throughout their playthrough. It’s a far cry from the ending of the firstFallouttitle, which felt incredible to behold and a perfect way to cap off the game.

Bethesda needs to tighten its stories in theFalloutseries and make its narratives more compelling. That way, they’ll be able to craft meaningful endings that can satisfy the bulk of players who invest hundreds of hours into their games.
