Despite releasing a few months ago,Elden Ringfans are continuing to stumble upon secrets that previously went undiscovered. For instance, oneElden Ringplayer recently spotted what seems to be a deliberate reference to George R.R. Martin, the author ofA Song of Ice and Fireand a key collaborator for the game.
George R.R. Martinwrote a significant portion of the lore players uncover in the Lands Between, and with that knowledge in mind, fans have pointed out a few things that seem like tributes to the author. For instance, while Martin has denied that he went out of his way to create characters who share his initials, the fact that so many key figures have G, R, and M names is intriguing. Perhaps another writer for the game did this to pay homage to Martin, much like Gideon Ofnir’s dialogue options seem to do.

When conversing withGideon Ofnirat the Roundtable Hold,Elden Ringfans will have the option to learn about some of the bosses they fight on their journey. Gideon proves his title of The All-Knowing true by telling gamers all about Godrick, Radahn, Rykard, Morgott, and Rennala. However, while the tales about gravity-wielders and giant snakes are entertaining, fans can seemingly notice an homage to George R.R. Martin by checking the first letter of each name.
As pointed out by Reddit user LuckyLuckLucker, it is hard to imagine that this order is a coincidence. It seems as if the names were placed deliberately so that they spell out “GRRM” when gamers go straight down the lineup, as this is not the order players will usually battle the bosses in.Rykardis a late game threat, and mostElden Ringfans will head toward Rennala before they attempt the challenging fight with Radahn. While it could just be a coincidence or a case of pareidolia, it would not be shocking if it was intentional.
Since it was posted, thisElden Ringdiscoveryhas brought in over 7,700 upvotes, with many believing that it is indeed an homage to George R.R. Martin. Others joked about the extra R that the player did not circle, such as limitofthought saying it stands for “recognize I will never finishThe Winds of Winter.” While fans will likely never learn if these names were ordered this way on purpose, the discussion around the image has been a fun one.
It will be interesting to see if George R.R. Martin ever works on another video game, or if he will collaborate with FromSoftware again in the future. GivenElden Ring’s success, many gamers would likely be on board with his involvement in another playable project - though fans of his novels would likely prefer if he stuck to finishingThe Winds of Winter.
Elden Ringis available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
