This week,Destiny 2developer Bungie discussed some ways it hopes toimprove the Trials of Osiris PvP modeto make it more enjoyable for players. But most of the planned changes won’t go into effect until next season at the earliest, which leaves players the option of trying to make the most of Trials as is, or waiting until the mode improves. Unfortunately, those who still want to get something out of Trials were met with some frustration this weekend.
Trials of Osiris went live this weekend and with it came “new” rewards to collect and a “new” map to learn. However, this wasn’t exactly a new map and the rewards were not exactly new.

Trials Map Rotation is Disappointing
InDestiny 1, Trials of Osiris was on a rotation that cycled through the same handful of maps that Bungie felt suited the mode. There were rare weeks where all of the maps cycled, but mainly it was a familiar pattern.Destiny 2players hoped that if Trials of Osiris would follow a similar map rotation approach, there would be a variety.
As it turns out, though, the map variety in Trials of Osiris is hardly varied. With Burnout coming back around inDestiny 2’s mode, the rotation has solidified and it’s disappointing for a number of reasons. First and foremost, none of theDestiny 2mapsare included in the Trials of Osiris rotation. Every single map in the Trials of Osiris rotation is a revamped version of a Destiny 1 map. They are:

It’s up to Bungie to decide which maps are deserving of being included inDestiny 2’s Trials rotation, but it’s also surprising that the developers have such little faith in their newer creations. There are at least a handful of Destiny 2 maps that could work for Trials of Osiris (Trials of the Nine used manyof these maps).
The recycling of “old” maps also calls into questionwhy Trials of Osiris took so long to return. For a while now,Destiny 2players have been sharing a clip of the Bungie devs saying they didn’t want to bring back Trials half-baked, but now it seems like Trials is almost exactly as it was inD1. And where there were some changes, many players feel that they were not particularly well thought out. Hence, the need for Bungie to spend a long portion of its weekly blog post talking about how it will improve Trials in the future.
It almost feels appropriate that the map this week is Burnout – because that seems to be what a lot of Trials players are feeling. Those that are still invested in the mode, that is.
Trials Rewards Make Flawless Pointless
The other frustrating element of Trials of Osiris that doesn’t seem to make sense is the rewards this week. For those that might not know, Trials of Osiris inDestiny 2delivers rewards at 3 wins, 5 wins, and if a fireteam goesFlawless with 7 wins. The 3 win reward is an armor piece and the 5 win reward is a weapon, but the 7-win reward can be anything from the whole Trials of Osiris armor pool.
This week, though, the 3-win reward and the Flawless reward are both a chest piece. So players who are lucky enough to go Flawless this week will only get two unique drops. Yes, the Flawlessrewards also include a glowfor that chest piece, but the glow still applies to the 3-win chest piece too.
This feels like a massive oversight on Bungie’s part and while the culprit is likely bad/unlucky RNG, there are still plenty of players frustrated. For most, the only reason to play Trials of Osiris is for the loot and if the loot isn’t original that’s a problem. Not too much there is already a feeling that going Flawless isn’t worthwhile, and this adds another notch to that complaint.
Combining the lack of variety in the map rotation and the repeat rewards, Trials of Osiris is doing all it can to pushDestiny 2players away this weekend. The mode was already strugglingbut now even some of its fans are feeling the burnout. Hopefully, Bungie can do something so rewards don’t repeat at the very least.
Destiny 2is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
