While the game certainly has had its ups and downs over its lifespan, one area theDestiny 2community continues to praise is the improvements in Bungie’s storytelling. The launch ofThe Witch Queenand subsequent seasons have more connective tissue than previous years of the game, with the narrative of the expansion and seasons feeding into the next. Coming off the final narrative mission forSeason of the Haunted, players are theorizing about what Season 18 has in store, and one fan suggests two major Awoken characters could have a role to play.
The current season ofDestiny 2, Season of the Haunted, continues the universe’s march toward The Witness' arrival as its shadow grows across the Sol System. Season of the Haunted sees Calus and his Leviathan return, now morphed and engulfed by Darkness, taking orbit above the Moon to commune with the dormant Pyramid ship under the lunar crust. Guardians are joined by Eris Morn, Zavala, Crow, and Empress Caiatl as they make use of the dangerous Crown of Sorrow in an effort to halt the communion and uncover Calus' plans.

After the final confrontation with Calus, who has given himself over toThe Witnesscompletely, several teases were dropped in the game about where Season 18 will take players. One of these was a message from Eris to The Drifter, the latter of whom is heading to the Reef as part of some “reckless plan” he has kept from the Vanguard. Given this tease, Reddit user Heresiarches offers a theory about two major Awoken characters, Orin and Sjur Eido. If this theory proves true, they could become involved due to their importance to the Awoken and the Vex visions Psions stole back in Season of the Chosen.
Breaking Down The Awoken Theory
The two Awoken characters have a long, interwoven history involving the likes ofQueen Mara Sov, the Drifter, and the mysterious Nine. Orin is a character veteran guardians may have already interacted with if they played Trials of the Nine or Season of the Drifter, though she is now known as The Emissary. In her previous lives, Orin was friends with Sjur Eido and served as one of Queen Mara Sov’s first emissaries to the Last City before she was killed during a visit to Earth. She was then resurrected as a guardian, a time which saw her befriend Drifter, before vanishing years later while searching for The Nine before reappearing centuries later after being transformed by the mysterious Nine into The Emissary.
The reason for Orin’s disappearance and transformation was the search for the killer of Sjur Eido, the first Queen’s Wrath and Mara’s former lover. According to lore, Eido’s life as an Awoken was spent alongside Mara, first as rivals before becoming lovers, and she was considered one of the greatest Awoken warriors to ever live. She was killed during the Reef Wars, with her body buried in a hidden tomb on the Reef. Her bow, Wish-Ender, was later found in Mara’s corrupted Throne World during theShattered Thronedungeon, and players have speculated she could be resurrected at some point, an idea Bungie has been quiet on.
Given the two characters' importance to the history of so many people and groups, and the fact that Bungie has been pulling fromDestiny 2’s deep lore more often for its expansions and seasonal narratives, Heresiarches theory isn’t farfetched. Examples can be seen in the game going back to the release ofForsaken, whether it be The Last Wish raid’s final boss being an Ahamkara or the reveal of The Witness tricking Savathun to seek out the Worm Gods inThe Witch Queen. Bungie also hasn’t been shy about exploring more of the Awoken, as was seen in Season of the Lost. Having Orin and Sjur Eido play key roles in a coming season could provide some major narrative shake ups for Mara heading intoLightfallorThe Final Shape.
