Summary

Deadpool 3already put fans on notice when they announced Hugh Jackman was slated to return as The Wolverine after retiring his character. If that wasn’t enough, there have been talks to bring back Dafne Keen, known best for her role inLogan, to play X-23 in the upcoming installment.

Keen, who had a standout performance as Logan’s daughter, Lauren, had talks with Disney to return to play the character before the strikes went underway. It sounds as though those behindDeadpool 3are confident she will return for the movie once the strike is over, whenever that happens.

The X accountCanWeGetSomeToastrevealed that Marvel had been discussing Keen’s return as the mutant forDeadpool 3before the strikes put everything on hiatus. “Sources have newly confirmed that Marvel went into negotiations with Dafne Keen right before the strikes started to bring her back as a grown-up Laura Kinney/#X23 in #Deadpool3,” the account wrote. They added that should Keen be added to the cast, she wouldn’t have had much of a role outside of fanservice. “They anticipated the strikes and are hoping schedules line up once the studios pay actors and writers fairly. Which lines up with Shawn Levy saying Deadpool 3 was halfway through filming. It’s not a significant role, expect it more to be a cameo.”

X-23 is one of the crowning achievements of the2000s X-Men cartoon calledX-Men: Evolution, where her standout abilities and personality type led to the character being included in the comics. Her popularity was so strong that FOX decided to include her inLogan, but took a few liberties, like having her be Logan’s biological daughter and, of course, making her a child. Keen’s aggressive portrayal of X-23 made her stand out, given how old she was when the movie was released (12), amd because superhero movies didn’t often feature children as prominently as she was.

She may not be the only one to make a cameo forDeadpool 3. Other rumors have spread thatLiev Schreiber’s Sabertooth will return to the franchiseto play his version of Sabertooth fromX-Men Origins: Wolverine, which is considered one of the weakest X-Men movies ever on top of one of the worst superhero movies ever made.Deadpool 3wants to hammer the fanservice in when filming wraps up. The real question is, for what purpose?

As exciting as it is to see blasts from the past make it back to excite audiences, they don’t always equal better reception. Despite bringing back Patrick Stewart’s Professor X inDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessand adding John Krasinski as Mr. Fantastic to the cast, fans (and actors) were still lukewarm on the film overall at best, includingPeggy Carter actress Hayley Atwell. It’s fun to see favorite characters make it back, but there must be a reason besides winking at the fans. TheDeadpoolfranchise has been a breath of fresh air since its first installment in 2016. Cameos could keep it that way, but it could also ruin it.
