There’s clearly still an appetite among horror fans for classic survival-horror experiences in the vein of the old-schoolResident EvilandSilent Hillgames. And with most modern big budget horror games going in a different direction, indie developers have stepped up to fill the void. This includes Dual Effect Games, whose classic-style survival-horror gameTormented Soulsis launching later this month.

TheTormented Soulsrelease date is pegged for August 27 across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X. And while thelast-gen version ofTormented Soulswas previously canceled, it’s now back in development.Tormented Soulsis coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One at some point down the line, but those that want to play it at launch will need to have a gaming PC or next-generation console handy.

Survival-horror fans excited forTormented Soulsdon’t have to wait for August 27 to play the game, however. If they have a PlayStation 5 console or PC handy, they can check out theTormented Soulsdemo that’s currently available on those platforms. There is currently no demo available for the Xbox Series X version ofTormented Souls.

Along with announcing theTormented Soulsrelease date, the developers also released a rather disturbing cinematic trailer, with some gameplay snippets sprinkled throughout. The trailer looks like it combines the action of aResident Evilgame with the especially dark atmosphere ofSilent Hill, so it seems like a safe bet that fans ofold-school survival-horror gameshave a lot to look forward to when it comes toTormented Souls.

The plot ofTormented Soulseven sounds similar to thefirstResident EvilandSilent Hillgames, as players take on the role of Caroline Walker, who happens to be stuck exploring the abandoned Winterlake mansion full of deadly monsters and other things that can kill her. The mansion setting sounds ripped straight out ofResident Evil, but the search for missing children definitely leans more to theSilent Hillside of things.

Tormented Soulsis clearly taking inspiration from classic survival-horror games, but it remains to be seen if it’s able to capture the magic that those games had all those years ago. Those interested can check out the demo now to see howTormented Soulsutilizes the PS5 DualSense controllerand get a sense for if the game is going to live up to expectations come its launch day on Friday, August 27.

Tormented Soulswill launch August 27 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X with PS4, Switch, and Xbox One versions also in development.
