Call of Duty: Modern Warfareis filled with tons of hidden metrics that help the game maintain a realistic representation of weapons. One of these is the concept of recoil stabilization which is found on several attachments throughout the game. One dedicatedModern Warfarefan ran some tests and discovered that there is more to recoil stabilization the initially believed.

By applying some simple game-design theory, the fan discovered that stability does not only reference thehorizontal kick of a weapon. He dispels this popular belief held by theCall of Dutycommunity and instead presents a new understanding of how recoil works in theModern Warfareengine.

Most modern FPS style games use the same model of recoil. Using this system, players can be assured that their weapon will not act the same every time it is fired, givingModern Warfareguns a realistic feel. It is important to understand that although the the bullet spread is randomized to some degree allowing the gun to kick in several directions, depending on the point of impact within the recoil model. If the bullets are biased towards a northern or eastern point, then the gun will kick in the opposite direction.

In their actual test, the player uses three variations of an AK-47. Each one had a drum magazine, no stock, and an 5.1'' barrel. The base weapon was left as is; the control variant had a merc foregrip and a compensator attached, and the third stable version was equipped with a muzzle brake and commando foregrip.

The test was simple. The player stood in front of a wall and shot as many bursts as possible. After each burst, they put the collection of images into photoshop and aligned all the active holes into a single image. After comparing all the groups and shots they learned that the base version did the worse showing a huge gap between the first and fifth bullets. This shows that there was strong recoil within the gun.

It was not till the third weapon was inspected that the fan noticed that the gun had a vertical kick. The bullets biased themselves towards a single point and after several tests, the possibility of a coincidence was lost completely.

From this experiment, players can learn thatModern Warfare’s weapon recoil stabilizationwould be better described as recoil randomness. It is not the recoil as much as the randomization factor of the bullets themselves that is being adjusted. If a player puts stability attachments on a gun they will find that the weapon has a decreased bullet spread. This would decrease both vertically and horizontally the overall spread of the weapon and by default decrease the recoil from both directions.

Although this is a limited test the information is vital to understanding theinner workings ofModern Warfare’s attachments and weapons. As Infinity Ward adds new guns, players will be able to make informed decisions using this information when customizing their brand new firearm.
