It is not hard to realize which aspects ofDestiny 2are popular, as it is those parts of the game that continue to receive support. New strikes appear regularly, raids are heavily anticipated whenever a new expansion drops, andCrucible fans get fresh PvP mapsto play here and there. Gambit, unfortunately, has not received much content at all in recent years, with fans of the mode suffering due to its low overall player numbers. However, a mode like Gambit could be much better off in theCall of Dutyseries.

Gambit’s PvPvE approach is unique, but it is one that many players consider to be unbalanced, largely due to how different weapons can feel in PvP and PvE environments. Still, the hybrid mode has an interesting gameplay loop that more franchises should try out, withCall of Dutybeing one of the best possible options. However, instead of dropping players into a multiplayer map like Firing Range and letting them focus fire on AI soldiers and a Primeval-like Juggernaut, the beloved Zombies mode would be the perfect home for a Gambit-style experience.

Gambit and Call of Duty Zombies is a Match Made in Heaven

Part of what makes Gambit special is the varied number of enemies, as players can drop into the same map to find Hive or Taken depending on the symbol Drifter pulls. From there, they can fight everything from Witches to Ogres, with the individual races having a ton of enemy types that can appear.Call of Dutymultiplayeror even DMZ simply could not offer that, as the enemy pool is too limited. Zombies, on the other hand, would not have that issue.

Whoever is hostingCall of DutyZombies’ version of Gambit - be it an unknown announcer or a returning figure like Dr. Monty - could pick eitherChaos or Aetherat the start of a match. From there, players could battle those respective universe’s mini bosses alongside the basic undead hordes. If Chaos is chosen, players could battle werewolves and blightfathers in place of Envoys, and in the spot of the Primeval could sit an Elephant from IX. For an Aether pick, hellhounds and manglers could be mixed in, with Megatons and Panzers being the Envoys and Der Eisendrache’s huge Keeper being the Primeval.

The core gameplay loop of aCoDZombies Gambit-like could be largely the same. Players could clear out groups of enemies that grow more difficult, filling a soul box just like they do in so manyCall of DutyZombies Easter eggs. Like inBlack Ops Cold War’s Onslaught Mode, stronger enemies can drop weapon upgrades, perks, and new guns, keeping the speed ofDestiny 2’s Gambit intact. The Heavy Ammo ofDestiny 2can be replaced with a Mystery Box spin, letting every player have a chance at a Wonder Weapon.

Invasions are where this hypothetical game mode can really stand out, as elements of the cult classicBlack Ops 2mode Griefcould be incorporated. While trying to gun down their enemies, invaders could also toss Zombie Meat at certain locations to attract a horde, or EMP the machine where the souls are deposited. This would prevent players from sending over blockers like Mimics and Disciples, interrupting the enemy team’s flow and demanding a bit of strategy from the invader.

WithCall of DutyZombies supposedly getting Factionsin 2024 after a long, long wait, a Gambit-like experience would be a perfect way to let groups compete against one another. If players align with Requiem, they could always match up against Omega, with faction-specific rewards on the line. This would make matches more intense, and when combined with a fast-paced game mode that rewards players for killing fast and having map knowledge instead of just being good survivors,Call of DutyZombiesfans would be in for an experience that is unlike anything else Treyarch has created.
