Bungiemight finally be looking to ditch its Tiger Engine for the Unreal Engine 5 to develop its new IP, according to a job listing on theDestiny 2developer’s website.Bungiehas used the Tiger engine to develop bothDestinygames so far, but is reportedly looking at a different option for its unannounced title.
The Tiger Engine was designed after Bungie’s split from Microsoft, which is a modified version of the Blam! Engine that was used for developing theHalotitles during Bungie’s time at Xbox. A job listing that surfaced in December 2022 also mentioned thatBungie’s new third-person game will use the Tiger engine, but the reference was quickly removed from the post. However, the latest job listing suggests that the game will developed using the Unreal Engine 5, which indicates a possible shift in development at Bungie.

As reported by The Game Post, the listing for the role of Incubation Gameplay Engineering Lead reads, “As a Lead Gameplay Engineer at Bungie, you will build the gameplay architecture and systems that make the game feel amazing – the nexus of animation, gameplay, and networking - using a wide range of technologies.” More importantly, the responsibilities section states that the candidate should be able to work with “Unreal 5”, which has changed from the previous Bungie listing, indicating a move away from its internal Tiger engine. Interestingly, the listing also mentions that this IP will be in a brand-new genre and will have “joyful PvP combat and action gameplay”, which is similar to an earlier listing aboutone of Bungie’s upcoming projects.
This is one of the many projects Bungie is currently working on, and it seems Sony is doubling down on the studio after acquiring it. While Bungie seems to be trying to venture into different genres, it is also sticking to its strengths and making another live-service game as well, which could be a part ofSony’s plan to launch around 10 live-service games by 2026. Additionally, it is also hiring to develop a competitive-focused title with an Esports landscape, which many fans think is aDestiny 2PvP only game.
Apart from this, it has other projects in the development pipeline like a mobile game in collaboration with Netease, a rumoredMarathonrevival, and a possibleDestiny 2animated show as well. Bungie is also reportedly working on agame rumored to be calledMatter, and it could also possibly be the new IP Bungie plans to launch by 2025.
