Brotatois a top-down shooter that combines many gamers' favorite carb with frantic roguelike gameplay. Players must repel waves of aggressive aliens by outfitting their potato hero with a vast array of weapons and items.Brotato’s seemingly simplistic formula has hidden depths. Each potato offers different stats, such as speed, range, and luck. They can also wield up to six different weapons at a time, allowing for countless loadout combinations.

ManyBrotatomodsarealready available on the Steam Workshop—some, naturally, turn the potatoes into anime girls. Many rely on the Brotils and Content Loader mods to function, so players should ensure that these are installed before beginning another starch-fueled rampage.

8Display Enemies' Health

Each alien wave inBrotatolasts between 20 and 90 seconds, and failing to stay on top of the constantly spawning enemies can lead to overwhelming swarms. Although this undoubtedly adds to the chaotic fun of the game, the lack of health bars on enemies can make it difficult to determine just how effectivea particular weaponis at thinning enemy ranks.

TheDisplay Enemies' Health moddoes what it says on the tin, providing both a health bar graphic and a numerical value to indicate an enemy’s current condition. This helps players to focus their fire and to stay on top of the alien threat.

7FreeRerolls

Although dodging enemies and projectiles is key to surviving inBrotato, much of the game’s strategy takes place between waves. Players have the opportunity to purchase new weapons and items using materials gathered in the arena. However, options are limited, and gamers hoping for a specific weapon must risk some of their precious currency on rerolling their options.

TheFreeRerolls modremoves this material cost when rerolling. This change may somewhat undermine the chance-based nature of the roguelike gameplay, but it’s especially useful for trying out specific builds, as well as for taking the pressure offplayers new to the genre.

6AnyWeapon

Typically, eachBrotatorun begins with the player choosing from a limited selection of weapons, including the baseline versions of an SMG, magic wand, and even a prickly Cacti Club formelee-focused builds. Throughout a player’s run, this initial weapon can be swapped out, recycled for materials, or upgraded to outfit the ultimate carbohydrate fighting machine.

Players wishing to test-drive the game’s vast array of weapons from the opening salvoes of alien contact can do so usingthe AnyWeapon mod. This technique does allow gamers to steamrollBrotato’s early waves (basic enemies can’t offer much resistance to a max-level Nuclear Launcher) but it facilitates easy exploration of the game’s arsenal.

Yet mods don’t have to be flashy—quality of life improvements are just as valuable as any number of alternate dimensions.Brotato’sMod Control Panelmakes modding easy, allowing players to seamlessly swap out various mods. It also allows for different profiles to be configured comprising different variations of mods, letting players better explore all that the Steam Workshop has to offer.

4New Ghost Items

VanillaBrotatooffers enough weapons to ensure that a player’s multi-wielding potato is never short on firepower. However, when it comes to fighting off alien hordes, it’s probably not possible to have too much of a good thing—especially when that thing is weapon variety.

TheNew Ghost Items modprovides a selection of new spooky weapons, including the Ghost Pistol and, for green-fingered players, the Ghost Pruner. These added weapons come with additional bonuses and drawbacks, specifically related to interaction with enemy aliens. The Ghost Trident is particularly interesting: this melee weapon gives players a relatively rapid attack speed at the cost of increased enemy spawn rates.

3FlotatoMOD

Brotato’s gameplay is as much informed by the player’s choices as it is byfrenzied run-and-gun shooting. These choices include selecting weapons, items, and upgrades, but the first and most important decision concerns the identity of a player’s starchy hero. Whether players select the melee-focused Brawler, the elemental damage specialist Mage, or the jack-of-all-trades Well-Rounded, among others, this choice will inform how their run pans out.

FlotatoMOD adds three new charactersto the mix, each with their own talents. From the furious Berserker, who trades a reduction in damage for an increased attack speed, to the Baby, who reworks how materials are gathered, these additional potatoes mix upBrotato’s gameplay in new and exciting ways.

2Genetically Modified Overkill

Aslovers of farming gamesare sure to know, a key aspect of modern agriculture is the blending together of various strains to produce a superior crop. TheGenetically Modified Overkill modallows players to combine potato heroes together in order to produce the perfect breed.

Whether gamers want to breed together the Bruiser with the Mutant, who earns experience at twice the usual rate, or the Ranger with the Crazy to try to create a crack-shot sniper, there’s plenty of room for experimentation. However, this GMO farming also leads to debuffs in the resulting character, forcing players to carefully crossbreed their potatoes for optimum results.

1Elemento

Brotatois not picky about how players choose to dispatch their alien foes, mixing contemporary firearms like rocket launchers withweapons that wouldn’t be out of placeinFar Cry: Primal, such as sticks and bits of jagged rock. More magically inclined players can unleash elemental damage, and the most wizardly of all might benefit fromthe fantasy-focused Elemento mod.

Elemento introduces a roster of fantastical characters, including the fearsome Darkness Lord, the Vagabond Swordsman, and the frosty Ice Lady. New weapons are also available, such as the tree-summoning Druid Staff and the Ice Spear, which has a chance of freezing enemies. Elemento allows players tochannel their inner Gandalf the Greyto ensure that any aliens “shall not pass”.
