Besiegeallows players to make all kinds of crazy machines to take on its many levels. With tools allowing players to roll along the floor with full control, or take flight in any direction, causing mayhem is a matter of when not if. Whether or not that mayhem is intentional is another matter entirely, asplayers must be careful with their creations, as they are prone to catching fire, or bursting into a pile of firewood at the drop of a hat.

Some of the game’s cleverest designers have taken the challenge, though, and have produced machines that would put the fear of God into anyone it approaches. Be they tools of mass destruction, or simply an impressive feat of engineering, there are contraptions enough to make anyone’s head spin.

Resources are limited on aBesiegemachine. Any bombs are one-use only, and there is no way to get more onto the machine once the player has started the level. This means, that if the player wants to take multiple shots, they’re going to have to devise a way in which their machine can house multiple explosives, and then launch them wherever desired.
This machine solves that problem rather beautifully. It lines all the explosives down a little ramp, allowing them all to roll into place gently enough so that they don’t suddenly burst and destroy the machine. From there, the sides contain small pistons which gently nudge the explosives into position, ready to launch at whoever is unlucky enough to be in the distance.

The obvious downside of this is that it is entirely stationary, and even if some wheels are attached, it’s doubtful to be easy to maneuver. Plus, it would need bracing on the underside to be able to carry its own weight, were it to go on the move.

Who needs weapons of mass destruction when they have public transport? While it is entirely useless in terms ofBesiege’smain objectives, it is an extraordinary feat of engineering genius to make something like this work. It is significantly larger than most machines, and no doubt has many internal workings that can’t be seen from the outside.

What’s most impressive about this design is that care has been taken to make itwork like a steam train should. For example, rather than using the game’s standard wheels, the creator has created a proper piston system with hand-made wheels that will drive the train forwards or backwards. All it needs to be complete is some explosives strapped to it.

To the sadness of many,Besiegecontains exactly zero dogs. It’s unsure exactly where dogs could be inserted into the game, but some intrepid creators have decided to take matters into their own hands, using the machinery tools on offer to give as close an approximation as they can toa dog in this game.
Using pulley systems to make the legs scamper along as close to a dog as possible, the way it scrambles along the ground is fairly cute. It even has a little hinge on the back for a wagging tail. It can sit, it can lay down, it can breathe fire, it can even spontaneously explode if it lies down too quickly; everything a faithful companion should do.

The solution to most problems inBesiegeis usually a very simple phrase, that being “more weapons”. However, weapons are pretty heavy, especially the fun ones, so creating a structure that can successfully house all of them without collapsing in on itself can be a tricky task. Thankfully, there are weird solutions to every problem in this game.

With spikes coming out from just about everywhere, and flamethrowers coming out from everywhere else, this machine can easily blend anything that gets too close. Amazingly, there’s fairly minimal structure holding it up, meaning it’s being held together with as little weight as possible. Less weight on structure means more weight for weapons, a philosophy that this design takes full advantage of. By using cogs and joiners instead of thestandard wooden machine parts, things can be a lot more compact and versatile.

When all else fails, just level the place with explosives. It’s not quite the nuanced strategy Sun-Tzu would write about, but this isBesiege, there’s no place for nuance here. Making machines that fly isn’t too difficult inBesiege, but making machines that fly in all directions can be quite the challenge.
What’s even more tricky is making that machine can still do damage as it flies about. More weight on the machine means a greater chance of it dropping out of the sky, or simply not getting up there in the first place. Using a combination of the game’s wings, and two propeller types, this machine manages to get into the sky and stay there long enough to job several rounds of explosives. When this machine gets above a building, don’t expect it to be around for much longer, and the machine can even get high enough to survive and fight another day.

Besiegeis available now on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
