Battlefield 2042is revealing a new game mode called Hazard Zone. While not much has been shared about it just yet, it has been confirmed to be a squad-based mode in which players work together in teams of four to accomplish a shared objective. To many, this simply sounds like aBattlefieldway of defining a battle royale, but developers promise that it is something more than that. The mode will be distinctlyBattlefield, and it should provide players with something that scratches the itch for a battle royale but still feels fresh.

Battle royale games are all the rage right now, so it’s no surprise that developers are jumping on that bandwagon in all sorts of ways. Though games likePlayerUnknown’s BattlegroundsorFortnitemay be the first to come to mind when thinking of battle royales, the genre has spread massively in recent years, even reaching unexpected places such as Nintendo’sSuperMariofranchise andTetris. For these reasons, many expectedBattlefield 2042to have a battle royale mode. DICE has frequently denied that this would be the case, and that doesn’t seem to be changing.

To be clear,Hazard Zone is not a battle royale mode. Players will group up in squads to compete against other squads, but the single death trademark of the battle royale genre will likely not be present. The officialBattlefield 2042website simply says “Squad up and drop down into the Hazard Zone - an all-new, high-stakes multiplayer experience.” More information will be revealed on October 14.

Now players can watch a short, 32 second trailer hyping fans up for the reveal of what Hazard Zone actually is. In terms of new information, there certainly isn’t much to be found int his half a minute, but it does reinforce the idea that every squad is for itself. This means that multiple squads won’t be teaming up with each other, even if theplayer count is high in thisBattlefield 2042game mode. Fans wanting to know more will need to tune in on October 14th at 9 AM MST.

ForBattlefield 2042to put this much build-up into the reveal of a new game mode means that DICE must be excited about it. Hopefully, it will bemore successful than the battle royale mode fromBattlefield 5, as Firestorm was infamous for its departure from the series' trademark style. With the reveal coming in just a few days and the game’s full release just around the corner, fans won’t have to wait long.

Battlefield 2042releases on November 19th for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
