Since the full release ofBaldur’s Gate 3in August 2023, the game has gone on to experience both critical and commercial success. Larian Studios announced on Twitter thatBaldur’s Gate 3has been nominated in five categories for Gayming Magazine’s Gayming Awards 2024, which seeks to showcase and celebrate LGBTQ+ representation in gaming and other forms of geek culture.Baldur’s Gate 3finds itself up foryet another Game of the Year award, as well as the Authentic Representation Award and Gayming Magazine Reader’s Award, with Larian Studios nominated for the Industry Diversity Award. The game then has two nominations for the Best LGBTQ Character Award for Dame Aylin and Shadowheart.

The Gayming Awards' recognition ofBaldur’s Gate 3echoes the game’s recent GLAAD Awards 2024 nomination for Outstanding Video Game.Baldur’s Gate 3has been commended for its LGBTQ+ representation by not only advocacy groups and award nods, but by players as well. The game’s inclusive character creation features non-gendered body types and gives players the ability to choose what pronouns they can be referred to in the game. Players using any combination of body type and gender can pursue relationships withany of the Baldur’s Gate 3 romanceable characters, providing players with a much less restrictive experience than many games have offered in the past.
Outside of playable characters and romance options,Baldur’s Gate 3contains itsfair share of LGBTQ+ representationin its NPCs. YouTuber Abigail Thorn voices Nocturne, one of the game’s trans characters, who is central to one of the companions' storylines. Visiting the circus in Rivington, players can meet the glamorous necromancer Lucretious, the circus’s leader, who also happens to be a drag queen. Players meet and interact with an abundance of queer characters while wandering the Sword Coast inBaldur’s Gate 3, each written and portrayed respectfully by Larian Studios and their performers.
While the LGBTQ+ representation inBaldur’s Gate 3has no doubt helped the game win a devoted fanbase,it’s also seen its detractors. Despite that,Baldur’s Gate 3continues to cement itself as a force to be reckoned with in the gaming industry–and in its respectful representation of the LGBTQ+ community.
